What is the #1 Sin for a Christian? - We Want Your Opinion?

Take the poll about sin at the top of the left hand column.

There is the famous old description of the Christian life as being like an onion. The outer layers are like the big, easy to identify, easily conquered sins; they peel off easily. But as the Christian gets older and more aware of the Holy Spirit’s teaching, each layer becomes more difficult to grab ahold of, they become harder to remove, and there are more tears to shed.

We are generally taught that all sins are equal in the site of the Lord, but I believe that this is a definitional issue. All sin is sin.  But you don’t have to flip over many pages in your Bible to find lists of the more treacherous or abominable sins.

I’m going to venture to create a list of what seem to be the most egregious sins. I am going to leave out blaspheming of the Holy Spirit, as I don’t believe that a Christian can do that particular sin.
I would love to have your additions to the list in the comments, or you choice as to which one should be #1 if you don’t agree with me. There is a poll in the left column for you to add your opinion and see how many are voting with you.

    1.    Not loving God above every other item and creature, idolatry
    2.    Not loving others
    3.    Failure to forgive
    4.    Lack of Faith
    5.    Failing to believe the Bible
    6.    Pride

Why a poll on this subject. First because I was curious to know what other folks thought. Second, because it is thought provoking. We are commonly hung up on the important, but maybe less significant issues of “when is a lie a lie,” or “what is murder.” Then our pride might cause us to think, I don’t really sin. But these sins are just about universal, and not likely to be resolved fully until we meet our King.

For more like this, please check out God Called - He Needs Your Decision!  It is now available in paperback and on Kindle through Amazon at http://bit.ly/GodCalled and other booksellers. The book contains many such hard questions that we might be shoving to the bottom of the pile.

  1. I guess I don't think there is a #1 sin. They are all equally deplorable in God's eyes, and all equally dangerous for turning us away from Him.

  2. I'd have to agree I don't see any "worst sin" in terms of degree. However, from a historical and human behavior point of view, the two sins the Israelites struggled with that got them judgment of God were idolatry and oppression. Which fit with #1 and #2 above. As well as Jesus' two greatest commandments.

  3. Hey Steve, thanks for the comment. I wasn't quite sure what it had to do with the post?
