“‘Taste and see that the
Lord is good,’ Psalm 34: 8,”
Let me tell you about a little girl who grew
up in China where her parents were missionaries. She became very sick. She had
lost a lot of weight because she had a disease called tuberculosis, which made
her cough a lot. Her clothes hung on her, and her mother had to constantly take
in the seams so they would fit. She had no appetite, and couldn’t eat much at
all. Her mother tried everything to encourage her to eat, but she just kept
becoming thinner and thinner. One day, her mother brought her an avocado. She
just held the fruit that had the shiny green skin in front of her daughter for
her to look at. Taking a sharp knife, she peeled the skin off of half the
avocado.
“Look what a beautiful piece of fruit I have
in front of me,” she said to her daughter. In a quick, smooth motion of her
hand, she sliced a thin piece of the creamy fruit. “Hmmm, this is delicious,” she said, and popped it into her mouth.
Her daughter watched her chew and swallow it.
‘Would you like to try a
little piece?’ her mother asked. The little girl nodded. Her mother sliced off
a tiny section and popped it into the little girl’s mouth. It was smooth and
delicious and easy to swallow. Each day, the mother gave her daughter a little
more avocado until one day she could eat almost a whole one by herself. The
mother knew that the avocado would bring back her daughter’s appetite and help
her grow into a healthy girl. Learning to love God is a lot like eating a new
food, like an avocado. We need to taste and see God’s goodness.
